Do I Have To??
I ordered a couple textbooks online a few days ago and my package arrived today. One of the books... made me remember why I never wanted to go to college.
Math book.
Hlleghhhh
(That's my gagging/throwing up noise.)
As a freshmen and sophomore in high school, I had a love/hate relationship with math. As much as I loved being one of only three sophomores in my algebra 2 class full of juniors and seniors, and almost always doing better than most of them, I still hate the thought of doing it all over again.
I haven't taken a math class in three years. I am NOT excited to take it this semester.
For some dumb reason, I thought I could avoid a math class for the rest of my life. Then I decided to go to college. Which totally went against the mind of my little 15 year old self.
But here I am, trying to better myself by getting an education.

Bleh
Today has had the weirdest mixture of emotions, nerves, anxiety, stress, shock and whatever else. I started the day off kinda nervous. Then extremely happy and excited. Then bummed. Then happy. Then freaked out, upset, pissed at myself. Curious and confused. And now just plain exhausted.
My day consisted of:
a relaxed interview ish thing. a job offer. lunch with mommy to celebrate getting job. a cancelled party. babysitting gig due to lack of party. car accident on way to babysit. too many tears. a car to borrow for the weekend. a truly beautiful sunset. jack in the box for dinner.
A really weird mix of good and bad things. I still can't figure it all out.
I'm exhausted and can't wait to go to sleep.

Blessings
Karibu!! (Welcome!)
Tonight I cooked an authentic Kenyan meal for my family. It was so fun! I was in the kitchen for nearly two hours and then had TONS of dishes to wash afterwards but it was so worth it.
Here are some pictures...
Tonight I cooked an authentic Kenyan meal for my family. It was so fun! I was in the kitchen for nearly two hours and then had TONS of dishes to wash afterwards but it was so worth it.
Here are some pictures...
Many places we went "treated" us by getting us bottled soda. I decided we had to have them too.
Minus the candles, all the decorations were right from Kenya!
Rice! (I also made beans) Two of the main staples.
Irio (mashed potatoes mixed with pureed peas and corn)
Chapati bread. It's like a mix between pita and tortilla.
"Kenyan Butterfinger" (Peanut butter, oatmeal, chocolate. Yum!)
It was such a tasty meal! Eating it took me back to those short weeks I spent in Kenya a few months ago. There was something about the taste of the food and the way it quickly filled my stomach that was familiar and uncomfortable. (Lots of starchy food with soda on top of it= FULL stomach) In Kenya, it is rude to leave food on your plate so we had to eat everything they gave us. Needless to say, there were many days spent with upset tummies.
Looking back on my trip, a smile always comes to my face. I learned and experienced so much. I wish I could express it all... but it is so very hard too and I don't think I even understand it all yet.
I am so blessed to have all of these memories and the knowledge of real people's stories and living situations. The Lord has blessed me beyond words.
My Pictures Do the Talking
I was looking at my Facebook a little while ago and I realized that I have a whole stinkin bunch of pictures on there. But hey, I love photography so I can get away with it right?
I thought I would share some of my favorite pictures on here, to make my page a little more colorful. These are pictures that I still feel really convey the emotion at the time of the shot. Or maybe they just bring me back to the moment. (Sadly, all of these are more than a year old, some up to three years. Perhaps soon I will upload my favorite recent pics) Enjoy.
Taken at Camp Cedar Crest. I love that you can see the snow falling and the people in the foreground are so bundled that you don't see their faces. And then that one guy sticks out, no hood. I like it.
One of the greatest moments of my life: seeing Family Force 5 in concert last year after being a fan for five years. Most exhilerating, exciting, crazy, fun thing ever.
I call this one "Take Me Away". I snapped this somewhere up north, and it just seems like the perfect getaway house, country roads, plenty of shade from the trees, and lots and lots of fresh grass to run through.
This is another beautiful moment I experienced. I went on a three hour ride through the countryside at my aunt's ranch. This picture breathes whimsy and freedom.
An awesome hike I went on with my aunt. It's densely wooded, but opens up to grassy meadows every once in a while, and it's right on the coast! If I was a hippie I would live there in the forest with the birds and the trees and the ocean calling.
One of my first glimpses of Portland, OR four or five years ago. God has given me an intense passion for this city and I can't wait to see it burn.

This is overlooking part of my aunt and uncle's property. This photo always makes me think of a time of rest. I spent a few days at their beautiful ranch getting back on my feet.
It's a sad, bleak, lonely photo taken from my cell phone. But it reminds me of where I have been and gives me hope for the future because I know my God is good.
Forbidden pleasures.
A first view in New York City. Busy busy place with not so great memories, but I love it the same.
One of the sacred notebooks lying on a table at my old high school. So much history in those things. We could write books with the stories told in all four of them

I don't think that any one of them believes that the revolution's real.
We will burn it down and build it again,
what was buried in flame.
Burn it down and build it again from the bricks that remain.
I love this city, but I've set and numbered its days.
I love this city, enough that I'll set it ABLAZE.

A Fair Day
I went to the OC fair today and it was lovely. We ate tons of yummy food, looked at all the animals, vegetables, flowers, crafts, art, people, and whatever else there was. It was a super fun time to hang with the family.
I was excited to go into the arts building. Photography and paintings and what nots. It. was. awesome. There were almost too many things to look at. I thought I had almost finished going through the photography(I found out later that I skipped a whole section) and my family said they were going to move on to something else so I stuck around by myself. I still had the whole other half of the building to walk through... I continued checking out the beautiful photos and moved onto the paintings. I don't think I have been so moved by so many paintings in one sitting. It was overwhelming. So many beautiful things to look at, guess the meaning of, and connect with. One artist had a whole exhibit with lots of cool stuff. It's hard to explain what exact media he uses because it was a bunch of stuff. But it was shiny and colorful. One of his was called "Before the Kiss" or something to that extent and it was all about the emotions felt right before you kiss someone special. And I totally felt it while looking at his artwork! It was so cool.
Another painting showed a young boy who was a child soldier in Africa(can't remember what country, I fail). I stared into his young, frightened eyes, noticing the gun hanging by his side and I was brought to tears. It was a powerful piece.
Many others captured so much beauty, mystery, experience, wonder... It's hard to explain completely the way it all made me feel.
One more painting that I liked was of a cartoon-looking robot pressing a syringe into its cracked heart. He had a sad face and there was red paint splashed behind him and even on the frame. Its title was "Not Everything Has a Remedy". It was a cool take on "brokenheartedness" and how people try to heal it.
The thing I love about art is that there are normally layers to it. There might be the initial portrayal of a certain idea or scene, but oftentimes if you look beyond that, you'll find something else and it will hit home with you somehow. I love how art can make me feel beauty and love but also heartbreak and fear. It's amazing to me that a person can portray those emotions onto paper, canvas, wood, etc without using any words.
I want to go back to the fair just to walk around again and study the pictures for even longer. And maybe get a fried oreo or something.
